UCSF seeks to make structural changes to address equity and anti-racism for research endeavors by: establishing a system of accountability for anti-racism and equity goals in the UCSF research enterprise; promoting and supporting UCSF anti-racism scholarship; developing a more diverse UCSF research workforce; and promoting and supporting community-engaged research.

UCSF Office of Research Anti-Racism Task Force: Recommendations

In December 2020, former UCSF Executive Vice Chancellor Dan Lowenstein appointed and charged the Task Force with assessing existing equity and anti-racist work relevant to research at UCSF and creating strategic recommendations to carry out structural change, with an initial focus on equity and anti-racist issues involving Black people and Black communities.

Inaugural Associate Vice Chancellor for Research – Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism (AVCR-IDEA)

Tung Nguyen, MD, was appointed to this inaugural role in Fall 2022 to ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are embedded throughout the UCSF research enterprise. with the development of policies, practices, and value alignment that proactively address racism and all aspects of inequity and discrimination.

Opportunities and Resources Supporting Underrepresented Researchers and Anti-Racism Research

  • UCSF Health Equity and Anti-Racism Research Symposium – the annual event showcases research and action to advance health equity and anti-racism with the purpose of inspiring future collaborations and research direction by highlighting the breadth and depth of health equity, health disparities and anti-racism research.
  • UCSF Research Development Office's Resource Allocation Program (RAP) – includes several grants that specifically support anti-racism research and underrepresented researchers.
  • NIH Diversity Supplements – UCSF has expanded this program to improve the diversity of the research workforce by recruiting and supporting students, postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in health-related research.
  • Research Action Group for Equity (RAGE) – provides support and infrastructure for UCSF researchers to diversify their study populations with services in consultation, participant recruitment, capacity building and training.
