The UCSF Action Research Center for Health Equity (formerly the Center for Vulnerable Populations) carries out innovative research to prevent and treat chronic disease in populations for whom social conditions often conspire to both promote various chronic diseases and make their management more challenging. Founded in 2006, the ARC is based within the UCSF Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine and is located on the campus of San Francisco General Hospital. Beyond the local communities it serves, ARC is nationally and internationally known for its research in health communication and health policy to reduce health disparities, with special expertise in the social determinants of health, including literacy, food policy, poverty, and minority status, with a focus on the clinical conditions of pre-diabetes, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Selection as a CHCI-Wyndham Worldwide Scholar Intern provides students with a one-time scholarship of $2,500 to pursue their degree. Scholarship awards are intended to provide assistance with tuition, room and board, textbooks, and other educational expenses associated with college enrollment. Scholar-interns will receive their scholarship divided into two checks during the 2016-2017 school year after they have completed their internship; one check for $1,250 in the fall and one check for $1,250 in the spring. In order to receive their checks, scholar-interns must submit a verification of full-time enrollment. CHCI manages the disbursement of the scholarships; an annual check is sent directly to recipients. Successful completion of the internship is required in order to receive scholarship funds.
