SNMA is committed to increasing the pipeline of students of color that consider and prepare for medical & scientific careers. Its community mentoring programs provide science appreciation and education, mentoring, and academic enrichment to students interested in pursuing health-related careers. At UCSF, SNMA provides academic preparation, recruitment and retention programming in order to assure the pipeline to medicine is supported.

The Summer Research Program provides research opportunities in the biomedical and biological sciences. Students selected for summer research at UC San Francisco spend up to ten weeks working with UCSF faculty members on research projects. Participants in the program take part in seminars, lectures, and social events, creating a cohesive and supportive community. At the end of the program, students give presentations of their research and get valuable feedback from students, postdocs, and faculty at UCSF. Students are supported in these programs by funds from the AMGEN Scholars Program, the National Science Foundation, Genentech, the University of California Office of the President, and UCSF Graduate Division.

Center for Aging in Diverse Communities (CADC) scholars will have the opportunity to interact with investigators on the CADC center grant, enhance their research skills and expand their knowledge about aging and disparities research among minority populations. Scholars will be assisted in developing and submitting a career-development or independent research proposal based on results of their pilot studies. CADC scholars will receive training in issues pertaining to minority aging research as well as feedback on papers, grant ideas, and other academic products through monthly seminars focused on works in progress with CADC faculty. They will be encouraged to participate in scientific meetings and training opportunities offered by the National Institute on Aging. CADC Scholars will also have access to the resource cores of the UCSF Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) that supports research on the determinants of outcomes of disability in vulnerable elders. The OAIC will also be co-funding one of the CADC pilot awards focused on vulnerable older adults.

UNCF/Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships will help African American graduate students complete coursework, conduct research, and prepare the dissertation required for a doctoral degree in the biomedically relevant life or physical sciences and engineering. Awards up to $53,500. At least 12 dissertation fellowships will be awarded in 2014. Each fellowship provides up to a maximum of $53,500, which includes a Stipend of up to $43,500 for the Fellow and a Research Grant of up to $10,000 to support the research needs of the Fellow. The fellowship stipend is intended to cover from 12-24 months of fellowship tenure. A maximum of $30,000 in stipend may be received in any 12 month period. The Fellow must be engaged in and within 1-3 years of completing the dissertation research having successfully completed all qualifying exams by September 1, 2015. Each UNCF Merck Graduate Fellow will be paired with a mentor/s and will be expected to maintain regular contact with his/her mentor. Each Fellow will present a progress report of research work during the last half of the fellowship tenure. Each Fellow must also submit a two-page research summary of their fellowship research and updated Curriculum Vitea to UNCF at the end of their fellowship tenure. UNCF must be notified upon receipt of the degree.

The Graduate and Postdoc Queer Alliance works to build an active community of LGBTQI researchers at UCSF by hosting events for LGBT students, post-docs, and others. These events include social gatherings, career advancement, and mentorship opportunities. We also strive to increase visibility for LGBTQI researchers through our social media, publicity around the UCSF campus, and organized events, including our annual OUT In Science panel and the annual Welcome Picnic at the beginning of the Fall Quarter.
